"Today our dream has become reality."

In 2006, Ave Maria hired The Compass Group to conduct a fundraising planning study that tested the feasibility of improving the 50-year-old nursing home. In looking at best practices nationwide, it was decided that Ave Maria become part of the Green House® Project. Ave Maria Home was the first long-term care community in West Tennessee approved to build Green House homes. Working with The Compass Group as fundraising consultants, Ave Maria embarked on a $3 million campaign that far exceeded their goal – by raising more than $6.5 million. The Compass Group continues to provide consulting services to Ave Maria for their annual and special events.

Frank Gattuso, Executive Director of Ave Maria Home has enjoyed working with Compass on the Green House® Project: "It’s been a lot of fun working with the team from Compass. They understand fundraising and they understand Ave Maria. This has proved a winning combination as we have raised far more money than we ever did in the past."

Over the past year, Ave Maria has completed three 7,500 square foot, one-story brick homes on its property - St. Francis House, St. Anne House, and St. Joseph House. A fourth home, St. Mary House, will soon be under construction.

Each Green House offers private rooms and bathrooms for ten nursing home elders, a common hearth area for meals and socializing, and a secured patio area. Elders live together in intentional communities; manage their own schedules for eating, sleeping, and activities; and participate in group activities. Family and friends are encouraged and welcome to join the community at meal times and throughout the day.

Ave Maria’s Green Houses offer our elders a true home, not a home-like atmosphere. The Green House model is a de-institutionalization effort designed to restore individuals to a home in the community by combining small homes with the full range of personal care and clinical services expected in high-quality nursing homes. The vision of this model is to have Green House homes in every community where elders and others enjoy excellent quality of life and quality of care. Residents, their families, and the staff engage in meaningful relationships built on equality, empowerment, and mutual respect; where people want to live and work; and where all are protected, sustained, and nurtured without regard to the ability to pay.

Ave Maria’s programs and services provide a continuum of care for elders. This licensed, long-term care facility offers 24 hour nursing care, assisted living with a specialized dementia unit (St. Luke Cottage), an Adult Day Program, and HomeCare services. The Adult Day Program and HomeCare Services provide care to a growing number of elders who wish to remain in their homes, but who need some assistance with daily living skills. In addition, Ave Maria provides pastoral care and mission related services to all residents and staff.

Like most Catholic healthcare facilities, Ave Maria is committed to serving those who need care regardless of their financial situation. Therefore, the Ave Maria Foundation of Memphis was begun to fund those programs and services at Ave Maria Home.
