America’s Summit on National Parks -

February 2012

Dear Clients, Colleagues, and Friends,

The Compass Group was honored to be a sponsor of America’s Summit on National Parks – a two-day dialogue with environmental and conservation leaders from across the nation held last month in Washington, DC. With the centennial of the national parks coming up in 2016, these leaders came together to share ideas and strategies to celebrate our national parks and ensure a thriving national park system as it begins its second 100 years of existence. Joined by my colleague, Compass Senior Vice President Robert Bull, we were proud to represent the only fundraising consulting firm for the first of its kind, and arguably most important conversation our country will have about our national parks.

The Summit was led by Compass client National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), The National Park Foundation and the National Park Hospitality Association. Nearly 400 park supporters convened January 24-26 at the Ronald Regan Building in Washington, DC to create an “Action Agenda” in response to the recently published National Park Service Call to Action report. The Summit elicited rich dialogue highlighting opportunities and challenges around securing public and private funding, reaching younger and more diverse populations, promoting healthy lifestyles and access to our parks, and utilizing creative educational strategies, such as social media and video games, to bring to parks to the people.

The strongest endorsement was a short clip from President Barack Obama announcing his executive order to make national parks an international tourist destination. The Summit also attracted top level government officials, including U.S. Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar and Director of the National Park System Jon Jarvis.

For more than three decades Compass team members have professionally and personally demonstrated passion, dedication and commitment to environmental organizations. It was most gratifying to see so many of our clients and friends in attendance at the Summit: Yellowstone Association, Yellowstone Park Foundation, Grand Canyon Association, Mount Rushmore Society, Friends of Acadia, The Accokeek Foundation, Friends of Virgin Island National Park and the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

We want to give a special thank you to NPCA President, Tom Kiernan and NPF President and CEO, Neil Mulholland for the opportunity to play a supportive role in such a historic event. The Compass Group is honored to be part of this inspiring movement to promote and protect our national parks.
